Metsaema Spirit Doll (adopted)
(Mother of the Forest in Estonian mythology)
My spirit doll is for display rather than for play and symbolizes or embodies an activity, a spiritual moment, experience, the divine, etc. The spirit doll is an ancient being, familiar and beloved to many cultures around the world. By engaging in these ancestral crafts we weave a bridge back to our own great grandmothers, before she travels on to do her work with those who need her.
Metsaema is made from variety of fabrics, including clay, bundled sticks, knitted wool, muslin, mohair, felt, fleece and silk. I sculpted her face to represent the tribal dolls from various countries, painted in layers and with sparkle. She has a hook on her back for hanging.
Metsaema measures 28cm in total.
