Maia
To the Romans, Maia was the incarnation of the earth mother and goddess of spring, after whom they named the month of May.
My spirit doll is for display rather than for play and symbolizes or embodies an activity, a spiritual moment, experience, the divine, etc. The spirit doll is an ancient being, familiar and beloved to many cultures around the world. By engaging in these ancestral crafts we weave a bridge back to our own great grandmothers, before she travels on to do her work with those who need her.
Maia, my new Spirit Doll, is made from clay, sticks, wool, muslin, ribbons, fleece and silk. I sculpted her face to represent the tribal dolls from various countries, painted in layers. She has a hook on her back for hanging. Her little babies, wrapped in muslin, are removable, but they are only heads.
Maia measures 30cm in total.
